EU: ‘Great package of sanctions ahead’ for Iran

The European Union is discussing fresh sanctions on Iran, targeting the production and export of missiles and drones, the bloc’s foreign affairs chief has said.

‘We are going to take measures with respect to the production, and exports of missiles and drones,’ Josep Borrell said as he arrived for an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg, 22 April. ‘There is a great package of sanctions.’

The sanctions would also cover Iranian drone and missile deliveries not only to Russia but also to proxies in the region, Borrell was reported as saying. The EU had warned it would impose more sanctions on Tehran following its 13 April attack on Israel with hundreds of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (‘UAVs’), most of them shot down by Israeli and allied forces, led by the United States.

Last week, the United States and Britain made good on their promises of unleashing new sanctions on Iran for the attack on Israel, with Washington targeting 16 individuals and two entities allegedly related to Tehran’s UAV production, and London listing seven individuals and six entities ‘who have enabled Iran to conduct destabilising regional activity, including its direct attack on Israel.’
